Sound Therapy

What is sound therapy?

Sound healing therapy is the therapeutic application of sound frequencies to a person with the intention of bringing them into a state of harmony and health by balancing the physical, mental, emotional, or metaphysical aspect of their being.

Whether it is the sound of the dawn chorus, a breeze through the trees on a summer’s day or your favourite music track that always brings you to tears, the ability that sound and music has to move us is well recognised.  At some point in our lives we have all been moved by sound or music.

How Sound Therapy improves your life

Everything that moves vibrates, from the smallest molecule to the universe itself. As long as it is vibrating, it is making some kind of sound. We may not perceive the sound, as it may be below or above the threshold of our hearing. Every atom, molecule, cell, gland, and organ of the human body absorbs and emits sound. By working with specific notes that resonate at the frequency the body needs most, it is possible to harmonize the body’s energy centres which have an impact on your organs, hence the saying, “Sound Mind, Sound Body.”
Sound Healing, through various techniques and technologies, is the educated and conscious use of the energy of sound to reach identified goals and promote wellness in the human system.
Healing with sound can improve or cure many ailments including, but not limited to:

  • Stress
  • PTSD
  • Pain
  • Anxiety disorder
  • Mood swings, or negative emotions, such as sadness, aggravation, anger, self-pity, and heartbreak.
  • Psychological/Psychiatric and behavioural disorders including autism, depression, learning disabilities, and developmental troubles

For the healthy, it also brings about:

  • Clarity and balance
  • Relaxation
  • Improved memory and concentration
  • Improved sleep
  • A stronger immune system
  • Improved creativity

Heightened awareness, both of the self and the environment

How Does Sound Therapy Work?

If we accept that sound is vibration and we know that vibration touches every part of our physical being, then we understand that sound is heard not only through our ears but through every cell in our bodies.  One reason sound heals on a physical level is because it so deeply touches and transforms us on the emotional and non-material planes. Sound can redress imbalances on every level of physiologic functioning and can play a positive role in the treatment of virtually any medical disorder.

Each organism has its own vibratory rate.  Every object in the universe has its own unique resonant frequency. Tap a wineglass and it will emit a ringing sound determined by its size, shape and the thickness.  When an opera singer vibrates a glass with her voice the singer has matched her voice to the resonant frequency of the glass and set it into vibration.  As the singer increases the volume of her sound the resonance becomes too great for the forces that hold the glass together and it shatters.  Luckily, our bodies are more flexible than a glass and the cells of our body enjoy the vibration of sound.

Modern medicine now uses sound waves to break up kidney and gallstones in the body.  The machine used is called a Lithotripter. This machine bombards the stones with a specific sound frequency for one to two hours.  The patient is admitted in the morning and discharged in the evening. Generally, no anaesthetic is needed. With most patients only one treatment is necessary to break the stones down.  The pulverised stone is passed out of the body through the urine.

Every organ, every bone, every cell in the body has its own resonant frequency. Together they make up a composite frequency like the instruments of an orchestra.  When one organ in the body is out of tune it will affect the whole body. Naturally, since we now know of the inter-relationship between the mind and the body, if we harmonize the body’s cells through positive vibrations, then the mind will also be harmonized.

Chakra healing

So, what are the chakras?  Chakra is a Sanskrit term meaning ‘wheel’ or ‘disk’.  In the simplest terms, it’s one of your body’s major energy centres.  You have 7 chakras in total, with the lowest at the base of your spine and the highest at the top of your head.  It is only when all of these chakras are open that you can feel your best in both body and mind.  Chakras have the loving responsibility of taking in, incorporating and emanating energy to keep us functioning at optimal levels.

When a chakra is not functioning properly or is blocked, illness is more prone to occur.  Our wellbeing on all levels can affect and is affected by the chakras.  If we are feeling depressed, then we may not be taking in the maximum amount of energy for our needs.  If we “block” feelings such as anger, etc., or do not speak our truth, we may be unconsciously impeding our healthy energy flow.  On the other hand, if we endeavour to work on our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health, we can promote with ease the flow of energy through our chakras.

Chakras are the connection between the non-material aspect of our being and the physical.  There is an endocrine gland associated with each one of the 7 main chakras.  Chakra balancing is used to correct the chakra so that the endocrine gland and all the associated structures and organs effected by that gland balance and begin to function correctly.  Through the use of singing bowls and special mantras for each Chakra, Bhagavatmrita can carry out a full Chakra balancing sound therapy session.

Singing Bowls

The main instrument used by Bhagavatamrita in his sound therapy sessions are his amazing Quartz Singing Bowl collection.  Made from pure crushed quartz, they magnify, transmute, store and transfer energy.  The bowls carry a vibration of sound and energy that when harmoniously played, opens our chakras and releases blockages on a cellular level.

Each crystal bowl is specifically tuned to a chakra frequency and when the singing bowls are played, and particular sound frequencies are projected into a certain area of the body, correct harmonic patterns and health can be restored.  The sounds from singing bowls are calming and induce a sense of peacefulness, it is a relaxation that goes beyond the physical body.  The tones of each chakra bowl will permeate your system – resonating your essence – so that inner chaos, conflict, and dissonance will immediately be transformed into positive vibrations.

Mantra Meditation

Mantras are one of the most common objects used for meditation—and one of the most powerful ones too.  Mantra is a Sanskrit word derived from two roots: man meaning ‘mind’ and trai meaning to ‘protect’, to ‘free from’, therefore mantras help us overcome the incessant demands of the mind.

At any given moment, our attention can be dwelling on only one object.  Even when we say we are multitasking, what we are actually doing is switching objects of attention very quickly – which is why multitasking is taxing and ineffective.  For meditation, the implication is pretty simple: in every moment that you are paying full attention to the mantra, you are not disturbed by any other thoughts, memories, or sensations.  If you are able to continuously string together the ending of one mantra repetition to the beginning of the next, you’ll remain in that beautiful state for the duration of your meditation.

Combining sounds and rhythm, mantra meditation can concentrate the flow of energy in our mind-body circuit, allowing us to adjust the chemical reactions in our body, and combined with deep breathing contributes to a natural reduction of worries and fears.  Mantra meditation balances the functioning of the endocrine system, which normalizes the production of hormones generating health and wellness.  The more refined our thoughts, our vibrations are higher, and the higher are our vibrations, the closer we get to a state of self-content and permanent happiness.

What can I expect in a Sound Therapy Session?

The sound healing sessions have a total duration of one hour, you will lie on mat, fully clothed, while you hear a range of instruments, mainly the Quartz singing bowls, chimes and voice.  After the singing bowls have stopped, there will also be a period of silence before you are brought back again with the repetition of mantras.

You are not expected to do anything during the Sound Therapy session.  Simply bathe in the sound and allow it to do its work for you on a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level.  Some people feel a sense of deep relaxation, some people may see colours, sometimes people get sensations which may intensify for a few minutes before disappearing, others may fall into a deep meditative sleep.

When you get home, you need to drink plenty of water. This will help your body to release toxins.  Most people feel deeply relaxed after sound therapy.  It is not good to do a long drive or work after sound healing.
There is generally a three-day adjustment period after a treatment.  Your body will be healing itself and you may feel aches and pains as the body integrates the healing you have received; old symptoms may return for a while before disappearing altogether.

Most people need more than one session to get their body into balance again. It is recommended that you have three weekly treatments, then review your progress at the end of these three sessions.
